Altona is a suburb of greater Melbourne located 13 km southwest of the city’s downtown business and financial district. This suburb, a combination of residential and industrial uses, is governed by the City of Hobsons Bay and has a population of almost 9700 residents living in an area covering 16.9 km. The demographic make-up is less than 65% native-born, English speaking Australians, with almost 40% of the residents foreign born from countries including Malta, England, New Zealand, Italy and India.
A key point of interest here is Altona Beach fronting Port Phillip, one of only two swimming beaches located in the western suburbs. It takes its name from a German city of the same name. Alfred Langhorne built the first homestead here in 1842. The Williamstown Prospecting Company was one of the first commercial concerns for mining coal in the region. Coal mining was important to Altona’s economy through 1930, when open-cut mining began in the Latrobe Valley.
During the post World War II era, Altona experienced some of its biggest population increases as immigrants flocked to this seaside community. Today it is considered one of the top 100 suburbs in Melbourne, thanks to a location that is equally close to the water as it is to the central business district. The Altona Bayside Festival is a popular annual event attended by both locals and tourists to celebrate the heritage of the western suburbs and Hobsons Bay. Year-round activities include productions from the Altona City Theatre company, Scouts Australia meetings, and numerous sporting competitions in football, soccer, cricket, lacrosse, basketball and hockey.
